ATTN: Forum Spam
« on: May 28, 2014, 11:57:40 AM »
Hey all,

It's likely obvious by now that we're getting a fair bit of forum spam and the rate is increasing. We're looking into this now, but in the meantime, please just report every spam post you see.

Be sure not to click on any links in the spam posts and do not communicate with any member who has posted any spam or suspicious posts.

The ban hammer is getting some serious usage at the moment. It's bot hunting season!

Bear with us during the invasion. Humanity shall prevail.

Remember: Bubble tea is fleeting. Armello is forever.

Thanks! Spotted one earlier which was posting dubious links so thought best to report it. Great job so far though - that's the only one I've seen! :)

Hope you ban all those spam accounts too, just go to the Members List and sort by latest Date Registered, a lot of accounts with the same YIM/MSN info, if that's not spam I don't know what it is.

Sheesh. They really must pay these guys to do all the manual new account registration steps... Or can even this be automated nowadays?

I thought the funny letter thing you have to do would prevent the automation? But technology is getting good.

The bots are getting smarter! But as long as they don't use their power for anything other than trying to sell Polish Air Jordans I think we're good.

I have no idea how simple these captcha things are to crack, but it looks like ours are just 6 letters (probably one of the most basic ones), so they might be getting around it with a random generator or something. Could be human solvers too, but if that's the case if we keep deleting them as soon as they're made they might just give up.

I didn't forget them, I got the bottle right here...

Oh, you meant the ones the spammers were selling.  :o

It's not that I need them or anything. They were a sample!

It's an issue with SMF. The solution I found was to institute a security question when registering. Example: "What is our flagship game called?" - Armello

Something along those lines will be enough to shut down bots.
